Deputy Home minister axed

The deputy minister of Home Ministry, Ahmed 'Maaz' Saleem who keeps close ties with former Home Minister Umar Naseer has been abruptly sacked from job.

Saleem who has been vocal about his support to incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom had been responsible in arranging several activities and pro-government rallies through his Home Ministry credentials.

Recently Saleem had frequently appeared at events hosted or headed by First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim. He was a prominent member in First Lady's campaign works for her husband Abdulla Yameen.

Interestingly Saleem backed Umar Naseer during the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) primary elections prior to the 2013 presidential elections to nominate a succeeding candidate. After Naseer lost to Yameen, the former Home Minister started working alongside Jumhoory Party (JP) leadership.

Saleem had followed his close ally's suit in transitioning to JP's policies and work. However he would later disband from JP's sentiments and come to work under president Abdulla Yameen.

Reports indicate that Saleem received his Deputy Minister designation through his friend, then Home Minister Naseer's influence.
