Civil servants to get pay hike next month

Civil servants would receive the salary increment from next month, finance minister Ahmed Munawwar announced Wednesday.

Ahead of this year’s presidential election, MVR234 million (USD15 million) had been allocated for the pay hike in the record 2018 budget.

Civil Service Commission (CSC) had earlier said relevant authorities were engaged in the discussions to bring about the increase the salaries of civil servants.

In an interview with government aligned 'Channel 13' television station, the minister said the authorities had now ended the discussions and the pay hike would come into effect from next month.

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom had promised the pay hike late last year saying that civil servants should expect a 37 percent hike for the lowest salary bracket and a 25 percent rise for the rest.
