Maldives former Defense Min taken from house arrest to custody

The former Defense Minister Colonel (retired) Mohamed Nazim who has been under house arrest recently, has been taken into Corrections Service custody, and taken from his residence on Tuesday afternoon.

Former minister Nazim has been under Maldives Corrections Service (MCS) custody since his conviction.

Authorities had not shared where the former Defense Minister was transferred to or the reasons for his immediate transfer from house arrest.

Colonel (retired) Mohamed Nazim was arrested after authorities discovered a firearm from his residence along with three unused bullets. He was tried and found guilty of unauthorized firearm possession and conspiracy.

Nazim's immediate transfer comes at a time when authorities have arrested Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed along with top-court judges bench.

Later on Monday night, Maldives Police had proceeded with the apprehension of former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, his son-in-law Ahmed Nadheem while his elder son Faris Maumoon was released later on.

Tension built up in Maldives when government head clashed with Supreme Court over the latter's Thursday night order to release nine dissidents from jail, and the annulment of anti-defection law reinstating 12 of the deposed lawmakers of parliament.

The latest blow came on Monday night when president Yameen declared a state of emergency in Maldives, through legal affairs Minister Azima Shukoor.

The head of state had since addressed the nation on Tuesday afternoon, providing justification for the string of sudden executive decisions.

The state of emergency was declared after president Yameen's last ditch attempt to convince the top court to revoke the order failed after the apex court rejected the government's 'legal and judicial' concerns over the order.

The constitutional rights suspended president Yameen has effectively quashed any moves by the opposition to impeach him while also stripping the Supreme Court of any authority.
