Top court judge in hospital after arrest

Maldives Supreme Court judge Ali Hameed is getting medical treatment due to worsening health conditions, according to one of his relatives.

However the top court judge's condition had not been officially informed by any authorities.

Reports claim Ali Hameed was transported to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) around 00:00hrs on Wednesday and was immediately admitted.

It is unclear the exact nature of his worsening health condition, however pictures taken of him transferred to hospital's emergency unit on stretcher has been shared multiple times by users. He appeared unconscious in the pictures, while one hand pressed to the chest.

The top court judge was apprehended after Maldives military stormed into the premises of Supreme Court on Monday night. Immediately after his arrest, Hameed was transported to Dhoonidhoo penitentiary.

The presidential decree for state of emergency was the last ditch by the head of state to suspend top court authorities including Hameed and Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed over a corruption related probing by Maldives Police Service.

President Yameen himself had strongly accused both Chief Justice Saeed and Judge Hameed of corruption.
