Maldives First lady and pro-Pres Twitter handles suspended

Official Twitter handle of First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim has been suspended along with several other Twitter handles promoting pro-government content.

Several ruling party activists' have faced abrupt deactivation from Twitter as well although the reasons for it is still unclear.

Two pro-government handles included 'Asurumaa' and 'Amaaz Yageen' through which many pro-government and president couples' campaign content are posted regularly were suspended as well.

The suspended twitter accounts also carry out live updates of Progressive Party of Maldives' (PPM) activities as well as president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's publicized movements.

Among the activists' whose accounts got suspended from Twitter administration includes Zaidul Ameen, who is noted for his recent side switch and prominent works in promoting content related to incumbent president.

From the reports and deactivation, it can be assumed the accounts were suspended by Twitter's administration side which would make it difficult to acquire the reason behind several pro-govt Twitter handles getting suspended.

Interestingly, the island nation has been thrown into fresh political turmoil since Maldives Supreme Court ordered release of nine political dissidents and annulled the anti-defection law, pitting the state-head to lock horns with the top-court's bench.

After a series of heated verbal exchanges between president Abdulla Yameen and the top-court bench, including a direct dismissal from the top court to accept several letters from the president requesting amendment to their orders, had resulted in the country reaching to a state of emergency.

Throughout the political tension breaking off, activists on both ends had taken to Twitter to express their opinion and direct harsh criticism at each other. At a time when the verbal exchange between party activists have peaked, this could become a serious setback for pro-government sentimentalists.
