UN working group claim AP leader detention violates rights accords

United Nations working group on arbitrary detention has claimed the religiously conservative Adaalath Party leader Sheikh Imran Abdullah's detention is in violation of several human rights accords signed by Maldives.

the UN working group had urged for the immediate release of the jailed party leader.

The international body has released a report citing that the arbitrary detention of AP leader Imran violates the articles 2,5,9,10,11,18,19,20 and 21. The report was compiled following multiple complaints lodged after Sheikh Imran was sentenced to jail for 12 years. UN working group had conducted their analysis based inquiring from the government.

Additionally the UN working group has claimed Imran Abdullah's arrest violates the articles 1,2,7,9,10,14,18,19,21 and 25 of International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights.

The report gives detailed explanation on how Maldivian state had violated the two international acts, adding the mistreatment on Sheikh Imran Abdulla fits into three degrees of human rights violation.

UN working group had strongly recommended the countries to respect the statements released by them with regards to human rights preservation, and hopes that any state in question would in turn accept their conditions.

The international rights body had added the Maldives state and Sheikh Imran's family will be inquired regarding his treatment post UN's conditioning.
