A sub-station of government owned utility corporation State Electric Company (STELCO) has been set ablaze, no casualties according to authorities.
The incident was reported around dawn on Thursday, and authorities moved to control it momentarily after receiving the report.
Although Maldives National Defense Force's fire and rescue officers were able to extinguish the flame around 04:00hrs, the distribution board has been burnt beyond repair. The distribution board provided electricity to 7 zones in capital Male'.
Fire and rescue officers who countered the fire claims that they have enough reason to believe it was an arson attack. The case is now being investigated by both defense force's fire and rescue division and Maldives Police.
At a time when the political tension has broken out to a new high, many have already speculated the arson attack could be linked to the rising tensions between the citizens over the political movements.
