Parliament approves Japan ambassador, NIC member

Parliament on Wednesday approved the name of Ahmed Sulaiman as the new National Integrity Commission (NIC) member.

Sulaiman, the former president of Elections Commission received parliament approval with 32 votes in favor at the sitting - from pro-government lawmakers.

Members of the opposition had boycotted Wednesday's sitting as well.

While deliberating prior to vote, Vilufushi constituency lawmaker Riyaz Rasheed stated Sulaiman had previously served at the special council of People's Majilis and was a former president of Elections Commission making him a viable addition to NIC. Rasheed added his inclusion will help the board with further growth.

Earlier in January 31 Sulaiman had resigned from Elections Commission over alleged mounting pressures from the government.

Additionally on Wednesday's sitting, the new ambassador to Japan was also approved by parliament members present. Ibrahim Uwais, who was nominated by president Abdulla Yameen for the responsibility received a total of 31 votes in favor.
