Media editors criteria amendment discussed Home Ministry

The amendment brought to media regulation demanding immediate termination of media editors without five year experience and relevant degree has been proposed to be omitted out by Maldives Media Council at Home Ministry.

Media council on Wednesday confirmed they had addressed to amend the article citing editor criteria to Home Ministry and requested to bring necessary changes to it to which the ministry had complied by taking up the issue to all relevant authorities.

Home Ministry has assured media council of notifying the developments on the issue and will inform a decision after deliberating the matter with all attached authorities.

The new regulation was gazetted on February 15 by Home Ministry citing an upgrade to the minimum criteria for news editors - which read that individuals who have worked for five years and more under a registered news media along a degree certification in the field as a qualification.

Moreover the ministry had demanded all local media to change their existing editors who do not meet the criteria by submitting the changes to Home Ministry within a month's duration.

The media regulation dictates that every local media must employ editors registered under Home Ministry - who are tasked with content management. Additionally the regulation also demands the editors should not have any charges pressed against them over any content they had published over the past three years.
