Criminal Court of Maldives has scheduled a hearing trial, of Ahmed Faris Maumoon who the state is prosecuting for bribery charges, on Sunday.
The son of former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, and is the elected Dhiggaru constituency lawmaker is alleged to have bribed several parliamentarians during the no-confidence motion against parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh.
The hearing scheduled for 14:30hrs on Sunday will involve presenting of evidence related to the case.
Apart from being charged with bribery, the lawmaker is also charged with impersonation and attempt to overthrow government.
Faris Maumoon was released earlier by the Criminal Court stating that due to the investigative procedure getting extended. Court found no reason for keeping the lawmaker in remand for this duration.
However he was once again arrested and taken into police custody with authorities claiming Faris Maumoon could attempt to sabotage the investigation by tampering with evidence.
Although his release was cited on the apex court order issued on February 1 along with eight other political detainees, the order did not get through for implementation as government intervened from complying to it.
