Maldives Police employs excessive force; HRCM

Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has criticized Maldives Police Service for employing excessive use of force to break flanks protestor mobs.

According to the rights body officers of the local authority had opted the use of unnecessary and excessive force against demonstrators of the opposition in the events that succeeded after the February 1 apex court order.

HRCM publicized the statement after it had monitored police conduct during several of the opposition led protests.

The independent rights body had listed out eight significant points after their assessment of which the most stressed was the use of unnecessary and excessive force against demonstrators leading to several protestors and even on-site journalists getting injured due to it.

Police officers had also violated the weapons regulations by pepper-spraying to protestors and used profanity against common citizens who took part in demonstrations.

HRCM had also pointed that demonstrators had taken children to the protests while they had continued to rally on high-traffic roads post midnight resulting in difficulties for vehicles.

However it had also noted that the recent protests have been peaceful demonstrations while officers had not used force to break ranks of protestor mobs.

Furthermore HRCM revealed that it is currently investigating six cases of violence against apprehended detainees during such protests of which three cases are initiatives of the rights body.
