Maldives ruling party affirms 'any amendment' to uphold govt

Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) on Tuesday has claimed its members were willing to bring any necessary amendments to Constitution should it ensure the preservation of incumbent state and its president.

At a press conference held by the ruling party, its deputy leader Abdul-Raheem Abdulla who also holds the Fonadhoo constituency seat at parliament asserted the current government is the very first to have upheld its citizens' best interest over other matters.

Which is the prime reason why the members of the ruling coalition front were willing to do "what is necessary" to safeguard the incumbent state, according to the outspoken lawmaker.

"Members of the PPM-MDA work in the best interest of the nation's people and they [pro-government lawmakers] are willing to do what is necessary for their people, we will continue in our efforts to strengthen and solidify the state. If amendments to existing laws are compulsory then we would be attempting to such matters accordingly. We are willing to amend any law or regulation if it would guarantee the preservation of president Yameen's administration, and we will do it without taking heed of opposition," ruling party's deputy leader stressed.

Addressing the anti-defection bill which was approved Tuesday through what seemed to be another contentious vote in a string of many, thus eliminating parliament floor-crossing, Abdul-Raheem noted that the bill was approved post several compromises of the ruling party members as well and it would not favor any political party in specific.

"Because of what we have achieved today, we can assure the future parliamentarians would running for seat with full integrity without any hidden agendas," Abdul-Raheem said emphasizing on the importance of eliminating parliament floor-crossing for personal motives.
