Local fishing boat goes missing with 25 on board

The Maldives National Defense Force's (MNDF) Coast Guard unit has commenced search and rescue of a fishing boat that has gone missing since Saturday.

The local fishing boat had embarked on its journey at 18:00hrs on Friday.

The defense force's marine rescue and search unit had confirmed the vessel was last contacted via satellite phone on Saturday around 18:10hrs.

A source attached to the now declared missing vessel had confirmed that the local fishing boat carrying 25 on-board was on its way back to dock after attending technical issues on its engine.

MNDF confirms they received update about the missing vessel around 09:20hrs on Monday morning.

The authority further had described the vessel is a 108-feeter conventional fishing boat with blue paint job on its outer body. The shelter compartment has a white paint job on its exterior.

Coast Guard has advised the citizens to be on the lookout for the vessel's possible sighting and make immediate contact on their emergency hotline extension 191 or 3395981 and 3398898.
