MDP PG leader remand order appealed at court

One of the prominent members of the united opposition front in Maldives, the parliamentary group leader of Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has appealed to the court over his recent remand extension by 9 days.

The opposition leader's advocates had filed for appeal at court on Wednesday while the court had ordered a nine-day remand on him last Monday.

The parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was arrested by authorities on Friday night's protest led by the multi-party opposition. Authorities claim he was arrested under ongoing state of emergency as well as for disobeying police orders.

Meanwhile his opposition colleague Ahmed Mahloof - south-Galolhu MP - had also appealed his remand to court.

While Solih is under police custody for allegations of disobeying authorities his colleagues Ahmed Faris Maumoon - Dhiggaru constituency, Abdulla Sinan - south-Machchangolhi constituency, Ilham Ahmed - Dhangethi constituency and Abdulla Riyaz - deputy leader of Jumhoory Party are currently under detention for their alleged involvement in the plot to usurp a constitutional government.

Furthermore authorities had arrested another parliament lawmaker during the recent political upheaval. Lawmaker Ali Azim was arrested without authorities disclosing the reasons behind his apprehension.

Court on Tuesday ordered lawmaker Ilham Ahmed be kept in detention for the duration of his trial while lawmaker Faris Maumoon and Abdulla Sinan will be summoned to court on Wednesday for their case hearings.

The former head of state Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, currently jailed chief justice Abdulla Saeed as well as the recently terminated police commissioner Ahmed Areef was expected to appear at Criminal Court at 12:00hrs on Wednesday for their case hearings.

Both Gayoom and chief justice Saeed were summoned to court on Tuesday however their hearings were cancelled after making them wait for nearly six hours at the premises.

Prosecutor general's office had pressed terrorism charges against former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, chief justice Abdulla Saeed as well as Supreme Court judge Ali Hameed.

While former police commissioner Areef is also alleged for his involvement in the attempted usurp against state government the son-in-law of former president Gayoom, Ahmed Nadheem is also prosecuted for similar charges.
