State imposes no-fly order on opposition MP

One of the leading opposition figures have been slapped with a no-fly order on Thursday - that ended the 45-day long state of emergency.

The north-Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy who has been a strong Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) affiliate was issued a no-fly order by Criminal Court judge Ali Adam claiming he is a person of interest in an ongoing police investigation.

The parliament member is alleged to have instigated uprisings in Maldives capital during after the emergency proclamation by the island nation's head of state.

The member is being investigated for the comments he made during a press conference on March 16, urging citizens to rally at the streets against the incumbent government. Both Maduvvari MP Mohamed Ameeth and Adaalath Party member Ali Nazeer are also being investigated by authorities regarding the incident.

Police requested criminal court to issue a no-fly order on Imthiyaz after it had received intelligence report of the member attempting to flee the country - which Maldives police has backed with a subsequent video clip and associated intel report.
