The local dockworker's leg which was crushed under a forklift at the main port in the capital Male was amputated late Wednesday.
Hospital officials said the 44 year old's right leg was severely crushed by the forklift truck and there was no other option but to amputate the badly damaged limb.
The victim underwent emergency surgery where doctors have now surgically removed his leg from below the knee. Hospital said the man was stable after surgery.
Details of the accident remains unclear as Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has remained tight lipped over the incident.
A dockworker had lost a leg last year after it was crushed under cargo container.
Such accidents, though rare have sparked concerns of worker safety at the port.
