Child crime on the rise, new figures show

The number of children allegedly involved in crimes such as theft, assault and drugs has risen, government figures have shown.

According to gender ministry statistics, 37 crimes involving children under the age of 18 had been reported in the past three months which included theft, assault and drugs cases.

In addition to child crime, child disciplinary cases have also been on the rise with 17 cases reported during the period which included unwarranted rage, refusal to attend school and runaways.

The statistics also proves that the number of child abuse cases in the Maldives shows no sign of slowing down with 800 cases so far this year. The figure equates to over 100 cases per month which was topped by negligence closely followed by sexual abuse cases.
