Government on Sunday refused to lift the travel ban on Maduvvarree MP Mohamed Ameeth, forcing the opposition lawmaker to miss his grandfather's funeral in neighbouring Sri Lanka.
Criminal Court had slapped a travel ban on Ameeth last month after he was accused of publicly urging opposition supporters to take to the streets in protest during the recent state of emergency.
The travel ban would expire later this month, but Ameeth late last month had asked the court to temporarily lift his ban so that he could visit his grandfather who was in Sri Lanka and in critical condition at the time.
However, the court had ignored his request even after Ameeth's grandfather passed away early Sunday.
