Police to establish drug offender remand center

Amendment has been proposed to the local drug enforcement act demanding Maldives Police to establish a drug offender remand center.

According to the amendment a drug offender remand center will act to facilitate arrested drug abusers and peddlers with basic necessities and medical care while keeping under constant police monitoring.

The original drug enforcement act holds National Drug Agency responsible in establishing and facilitating such a center.

Proposed by government aligned Feydhoo MP Ibrahim Didi the amendment demands Maldives Police to commence operations of such a remand center within 180 days of implementation.

The Feydhoo constituent MP had proposed several other amendments to the act which includes settling a mandatory fee at the National Drug Agency if any individual had previously completed or left a rehabilitation program from the center earlier.
