Ex-Home Min explains confusion over travel ban

Former home minister Umar Naseer on Tuesday claimed he has liquidated his shares invested in ventures prior to the decision of contesting to Maldives presidential designation.

Naseer's remark comes right after Civil Court slammed a travel ban on him following an undischarged decreed debt owed by Tourist Whale Submarine Private Limited; which holds his shares.

The company owes MVR1.8 million in debt to Maldives state according to Civil Court's order.

Responding to state's claim of Naseer owning shares in the mentioned venture, the former home minister claimed he had earlier liquidated or transferred his shares to other individuals prior to deciding to contest in presidential election.

Naseer also noted that Civil Court has been behind on updates regarding the company's new shareholders adding he has cleared the misinformation accordingly at the court and expects a timely decision regarding his travel ban.

Elections Commission conditions any individual with an undischarged decreed debt cannot contest for presidency.
