Ex-home minister to decide on pres candidacy 'this week'

Former home minister Umar Naseer on Monday said he would decide on standing for the upcoming presidential elections "this week" after securing the signatures of over 2,000 people in support of his candidacy.

By law a candidate is required to submit the candidacy to the elections commission with a minimum 1,500 signatures.

Umar had shared a photograph with hundreds of forms and had thanked his team of volunteers for the effort to secure the signatures adding that he would decide on filing his candidacy this week.

Umar Naseer remains the one of three candidates to publicly announce his intentions to stand for the crunch elections slated for September 23 alongside incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and opposition alliance presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
