Elections Commission (EC) of Maldives has advised to include two new lawmakers to the Maldives capital; Male' City with the population hike.
Maldives Parliament currently holds 85 lawmakers, with EC's new recommendation the number will increase to 87 parliamentarians.
Constituencies with a population of 5,000 or below will be assigned to two lawmakers while a lawmaker is designated to every 5,000 people of constituencies exceeding a population of 5,000.
The electoral constituencies listed by Maldives electoral watchdog has been revised as administrative constituencies for 2019 and with this change the commission demands adding two more lawmakers to Male' City.
EC has added two more administrative constituencies in their revised list, leading to the decision of increasing parliamentarians. Male' City currently holds a 13 constituencies.
The population of Maldives capital has reached 70,977. The constituencies have been increased to 15 in Male' City with 4,300 people per constituency.
According to EC, Male' City is the only area to undergo a significant change in population that required adding a constituency.
Maldives Constitution mandates Elections Commission to present the final report for electoral constituencies 150 days prior to the parliament term end.
