Family anger after teacher 'assaults' 10 year old student

The family of a 10 year old girl has expressed anger after allegedly being assaulted by a teacher at Seenu Atoll Maradhoo school.

A family member told AVAS that the teacher had "badly beaten" the 10 year old on Sunday.

The teacher had shoved the student against the wall, the family member alleged.

The student had reportedly suffered a head injury and was being treated at the island's health centre. The incident was reported to the school management and other teachers by the students of the class.

However, the school was yet to take any action against the teacher, the family said. The family member said the teacher had even admitted to beating the girl but refused to give a reason.

"This is not the first time we've seen something like that from the teacher. But the school has refused to take any action. They [school] have been trying to cover it up," the family added.

A Maradhoo health centre official confirmed that the girl had been brought in for treatment.

Police were not immediately available for comment.
