ADB grants USD33.07 mln for waste management

In a bid to improve the waste management system and its operations in Male' region Asian Development Bank (ADB) has made a grant of USD33.07 million to Maldives government.

The grant agreement was signed by Finance Minister Ahmed Munavvar on behalf of Maldives government while Ronald Antonio, ADB's Regional Corporation and Operations Coordination Director signed on behalf of the bank.

Finance Minister during the signing ceremony had announced Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction's plan of granting USD2 million to improve waste management, which the Maldives government will receive in an undisclosed future event.

Furthermore minister Munavvar claimed the USD125 million required under the second phase of the USD160 million waste management project will be provided by a financial institution in future as well.

In efforts to improve waste management, state has reclaimed a large portion of land from industrial island; Thilafushi while several incinerators have been procured and transported on-site.
