Government has issued a week's notice to vacate on 18 residences in Haa Dhaal atoll Kulhudhuffushi; that are close in vicinity to the developing airstrip in the island.
Reports confirm that the residences are being vacated in order to complete the development of the airstrip which is currently underway at the island. Maldives government is expected to financially compensate all residents of these homes.
One of the residents, who have received the vacate notice by messaging application 'Viber' said they have been ordered to clear up the plot within a week's time.
The letter sent by Regional Airports claimed the residences were located on state owned plots and the residents of these houses will be compensated 'fairly'. The letter further assured the residents they will receive the monetary compensation soon.
The Kulhudhuffushi locals residing in the said 18 residences will receive a monthly deposit of MVR10,000 to pay for rent. Government reportedly have issued them alternative plots where construction of their residences will take the next eight months for completion.
One of the residents who spoke with Avas Online claimed they were notified to seek alternative sheltering a month ago, and added the developers were not adhering to the court order.
The airstrip at Kulhudhuffushi is developed after reclaiming 30% of the 22 hectare mangrove; which is famous as the only one in the country with chalk sediment.
