Sinamale' bridge bus service to begin on Fri

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) would offer free public transportation for the first three days as the company begins bus service on the landmark Sinamale' bridge connecting the capital Male to the reclaimed suburb Hulhumale via the airport island Hulhule on Friday.

The bridge dubbed China-Maldives Friendship bridge before being renamed to Sinamale bridge was financed with USD126 million in grant aid and a concessionary loan from China along with USD12.6 million from the state budget.

The over water bridge will stretch out to 1.39 kilometers in length and 20 meters in width.

The bridge was inaugurated during a colorful ceremony last week, and MPL is set to commence bus service between the three islands on Friday.

A MPL official told AVAS that the price of bus tickets would be revealed later but the company would provide free transportation for the first few days so that the public can experience the service.

MPL said the company would start with nine buses but would bring in more in the next few weeks including double-deck buses.
