Court to hear appeal of jailed judge over forged arrest warrant

High Court is set to begin the appeal hearings for the magistrate convicted and sentenced to 17 years in prison for forging a warrant to arrest the president on Thursday.

Chief magistrate of the Alif Dhaal Maamigili magistrate court Ahmed Nihan was found guilty of conspiring to kidnap the president and exert undue influence on the government in June 2016.

The country's first appellate court has scheduled a hearing on his appeal for 11.15am on Thursday.

Nihan is the first sitting judge to be convicted in the Maldives. He was indefinitely suspended by the judicial watchdog shortly after his arrest.

In addition to the magistrate, former prosecutor general Muhuthaz Muhsin was also convicted in the case and sentenced to 17 years in prison.
