Ex-MP continues to receive threats over hate speech

Public outrage over anti-Islamic sentiments expressed by former parliamentarian, Ibrahim (Ibra) Ismail has prompted a series of protests and threats against the former lawmaker.

Earlier on Monday, three individuals protested outside Mandhu College, a private college providing Higher Education in the Maldives in capital Male' owned by Ibra. The three people were summoned to the police headquarters and a warning was issued.

On Monday night, a group of youth again protested outside the college, expressing their disdain and calling for Ibra's arrest. Later the same night, a glass windowpane of the college was broken in an act of protest.

The police are investigating the vandalism and have made no arrests so far.

Ibrahim Ismail was summoned to the headquarters on Sunday night due allegations of posting hate speech on social media.

Earlier on Sunday, Ministry of Islamic Affairs had stated that they would take strict action against the abuse of Islam through hate speech.
