Pres Solih expresses hope for strengthened relations with Lanka

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stated on Sunday that his current state visit to neighboring Sri Lanka would further strengthen the cordial relationship that exists between Maldives and Sri Lanka.

President Solih is currently visiting the island nation to honor the celebrations of their 71st Independence Day, on the special invitation of the Sri Lankan government. This is the first time a Maldivian president is honoring the event.

"Very happy to be here in Sri Lanka on my first State Visit to this beautiful country. I thank the Sri Lankan government for the warm welcome accorded to me and my delegation. I am confident my visit will further strengthen the cordial relations between our two countries", wrote the President on his official Twitter handle.

The Independence Day of Sri Lanka is celebrated on 4th of February to commemorate the internal political independence from British rule on that date in 1948. The semi-presidential representative democratic republic recently witnessed a massive political turmoil when the hostility between the country's top two statesmen reached its peak in October.
