Expats gather at police over wages issues

A large number of expatriate workers on Sunday went to the police complaining of non-payment of salary by their employers.

56 expatriates gathered at the Police Station in Galolhu ward of capital Male', where they lodged a complain that their wages are not being paid by their employers.

They were instructed by the police to file their complaints at the Labour Authority.

The issue of ill-treatment towards expatriates and delays in paying their due wage by their employers have always been a cause of concern. Such complaints are submitted frequently at embassies.

It is unknown which company the 56 expatriates work for.

Earlier this month, the Bangladeshi government advised their citizens not to migrate to Maldives for work. The largest number of expatriate workers in Maldives come from Bangladesh.
