Additional arrest made in rape case

An additional arrest has been made in connection to the attempted rape that took place in Male' city on Thursday night.

A 33-year old man who earlier fled the scene was arrested in Male' on Saturday.

The incident occurred around 10.55pm on Thursday night, the police had revealed earlier. Screaming was heard coming from a guest house in Maafannu ward by police patrolling the streets, who then entered the building to investigate. Upon inspection, it was identified that four men had attempted to rape a woman inside the guest house.

By the time the police arrived at the guesthouse, two out of the four men had already fled the scene. While one of the two remaining men were arrested while inside the guesthouse, the second man was arrested on the street while he attempted to flee. However, one of the arrested men was released earlier on Sunday, while the second man has been remanded to 5 days in state custody.

Upon searching the room occupied by the group, a bottle and cups containing what was suspected to be alcohol were discovered.

The police are investigating the case further.
