A man who attempted to mug a man in the early hours of Thursday morning have been arrested by Maldives Police Service.
The police revealed that the incident took place near Fathaha Sumbuli shop on Fareehee Magu in capital Male', where a man traveling on a motorbike carrying a large amount of cash was stopped by two men who were wearing helmets to conceal their identity.
Two policemen patrolling the streets at the time noticed the struggle between the muggers and the victim and was able to intervene and arrest one of the two suspects. The arrested suspect is 18 years of age.
There has been a recent spike in incidents of mugging involving people wearing helmets to conceal their faces. Notable incidents of snatching since this January include the robbery of MVR 250,000 belonging to FSM Pvt Ltd in reclaimed suburbs Hulhumale, MVR 300,000 of Root company in Hulhumale', MVR 150,000 and cheques worth 300,000 of Horizon Fisheries in Male' city, and MVR 560,000 of Expert Motors in Male'. MVR 2.3 million which was being taken to be deposited at the bank was also snatched, in addition to over MVR 2 million of MIFCO.
