Teachers for Arabiyya School start arriving in Maldives

Teachers from Al-Azhar University arranged for Arabiyya School have started arriving in the Maldives.

22 teachers were scheduled to arrive in the Maldives by the start of the academic year to teach Arabic-medium subjects at Arabiyya School, however the school has gone about four months without official teachers due to Azhar University refusing to send their teachers to the Maldives over miscommunications.

Principal of the school Mohamed Shujau Abdul Rahman on Thursday said 11 out of 22 teachers arrived in Maldives on Wednesday, while four more teachers are expected to arrive today. The Education Ministry has assured that the remaining teachers will arrive in the Maldives in the next few days, said Shujau.

"Yesterday 11 teachers from Al-Azhar arrived in the Maldives and four more teachers are due to arrive today. The remaining teachers will be arriving in the next few days, the Education Ministry has assured", he said.

In a tweet published by the Education Ministry, they stated that the 15 teachers who arrived in the Maldives on Wednesday and Thursday will be joining the school next week.

Students of Arabiyya School were being temporarily taught by lecturers from Maldives National University (MNU) and Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) during the last four months. 18 lecturers from MNU and four lecturers from IUM have been teaching at the school part-time.

850 students are currently enrolled at Arabiyya School. The 32-year old establishment has always been sent teachers by Al-Azhar University every year. Due to miscommunication, issues had risen up between the Maldivian government and the University, which has now reportedly been resolved.
