The Supreme Court has maintained High Court’s ruling to change jailed former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor under house arrest.
Adeeb was changed to house arrest under High Court orders during January, after his legal team's request to transfer Adeeb home was granted during a hearing held on claims that the state was negligent in providing him necessary medical attention.
The order was issued while the State was advocating against such a transfer. Therefore, the order was appealed immediately at the Supreme Court by the state within 24 hours. Adeeb had already been transferred home when the ruling was appealed.
The day after he was transferred, the Supreme Court issued a stay order on the judgement and halted High Court’s orders to transfer the former VP home, and ordered not to implement the High Court judgement until the Supreme Court comes to a decision on the issue.
However, on Thursday, the Supreme Court maintained that Adeeb needs to be transferred under house arrest due to his current medical condition. Therefore, the Supreme Court upheld the High Court order.
The ex-VP's is serving 33 years in prison over two counts of terrorism and corruption including the blast aboard the presidential speedboat which has been now confirmed as a plot to assassinate then-president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. He is also facing multiple counts of terrorism and graft charges including a second assassination plot involving a Sri Lankan sniper.
His family has claimed that he has been diagnosed with an internal cyst, kidney stones and a dangerous eye disease “glaucoma”.
