Maldives Police Service will be displaying the service numbers of police officers on their uniforms.
Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed on Sunday announced via a tweet that officer identity is essential to ‘accountable and responsible policing’. The change will be an effective measure for accountability, he said.
The new change will display the name and service number of the officer on their uniform.
During the administration of former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom, an incident occurred where officers in plainclothes made an arrest. The Civil Court during the last year ruled that it is not mandatory for police officers to be in their uniforms when making arrests.
