Man arrested over Dhiffushi unrest

A 32-year old man has been arrested over the unrest that took place in Dhiffushi island of Kaafu atoll in an alleged attempt by locals to catch a robber.

The man has been remanded to ten days in custody by Thulusdhoo Magistrate Court.

A series of disruptions have been taking place in Dhiffushi island over the past two nights after the robbery of a safe in a local shop prompted an uproar.

The missing safe has now been recovered by a group of locals, and the suspects of the robbery were targeted by said mob over the past two nights. One person sustained serious injuries in the assault, and was brought to capital Male’ for treatment.

A dinghy was also set aflame on Wednesday night during the unrest on suspicions that it was used to transport the stolen safe. However, the owner of the dinghy vessel has denied the allegations.
