Water shortage in Vaikaradhoo prompts outrage

The people of Vaikaradhoo island in Haa Dhaal atoll held a demonstration on Saturday night due to shortage of drinking water in the island.

Concerned residents of the island gathered at the island council and the FENAKA building on the island and expressed their distress due to the lack of availability of drinking water.

Ahmed Naseem, Council President of Vaikaradhoo which has a population of about 700 people told AVAS that the island has been experiencing water shortages frequently since the beginning of Ramadan. Drinking water has not been available on the island for the past five days, he said.

The council is working with the service provider FENAKA Corporation to address the issue, added Naseem.

Due to the frequent shortages of water in the island, work is currently underway to establish an RO water plant in the island.
