Home Ministry probes unsanctioned release of prisoner

Ministry of Home Affairs is investigating a case of a prisoner who was released from jail without receiving a presidential pardon.

Home Ministry stated on Friday that the ministry has been informed of a prisoner who did not receive a presidential pardon being released along with those who were pardoned by the president.

While Home Ministry has ordered Maldives Police Service to investigate what is presumed to be an error, Maldives Correctional Service has been asked to undertake the necessary administrative steps to identify what led to the error and to rectify the situation.

Home Ministry reports that the prisoner in question is currently in police custody for investigative purposes.
