Former prisons commissioner directs questions regarding prison reform to Home Minister

Former Commissioner of Prisons Abdulla Munaz has heavily criticized Home Minister Imran Abdulla.

The recently dismissed prisons commissioner took to popular social media platform Twitter to express his complaints against the minister.

In a tweet posted Friday, Munaz said the Home Minister himself has stated that all of the recommendations made in the Prison Audit Report prepared after assessing jail conditions cannot be implemented.

Munaz added that while a special committee was established to oversee the implementation of the recommendations, the committee only met twice at the most during the last year.

The former commissioner further questioned if Maldives Correctional Services was not given the budget to implement the recommendations made in the Prison Audit Report, tagging Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed and the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM).

A committee was established to oversee the implementation of the recommendations in the audit report on June , 2019. The 'Prisons Reform Monitoring Committee' consists of five members, including the Home Minister, State Minister Ali Nazeer, then Inspector of Correctional Service Ahmed Mohamed, Superintendent of Prisons Mohamed Asif and Police Spokesperson Inspector of Police Izmiya Zahir.

The Prison Audit Report issued in April 2019 made over 180 recommendations for prison reform. Abdulla Munaz was recently dismissed from his post as the Commissioner, and Inspector of Correctional Services and member of the reform committee, Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu was appointed in his place.
