Committee to oversee implementation of prisons audit

A committee has been formed to oversee the implementation of the recommendations outlined in 2019's Prison Audit.

Maldives Correctional Service said the Commissioner of Prisons on Monday formed the committee to implement the recommendations specific to Corrections and oversee the work.

The committee consists of senior officials from Corrections. The Commissioner met with the members of the committee on Monday, and requested the members to carry out their responsibilities as a foremost priority.

The Audit Report issued last year made over 180 recommendations toward prison reform. On June 3 last year, the Ministry of Home Affairs also established a similar committee, 'Prisons Reform Monitoring Committee' consisting of five members to oversee the implementation of the recommendations. The members of the committee include Home Minister Imran Abdulla, State Minister of Home Affairs Ali Nazeer, the current Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed, Superintendent of Prisons Mohamed Asif and Police Spokesperson Inspector Izmiya Zahir. The committee is headed by the Home Minister.
