Magistrate Nihan's suspension lifted

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has lifted the suspension imposed on ADH. Maamigili magistrate Ahmed Nihan.

Nihan was charged with terrorism by the state. Following his conviction, Criminal court sentenced him to 17 years in jail. The sentence was dismissed by the High court in November 2018.

During the press conference held on Monday, JSC revealed the decision to lift Nihan's suspension, noting that the commission had refrained from making a decision regarding his suspension until the appeal stage on the case against Nihan was concluded. However, the Prosecutor General has confirmed to the commission that High Court's decision to overturn the Criminal Court sentence will not be appealed at any court.

Therefore, the commission made the decision to lift Nihan's suspension during Monday's commission sitting, but will continue to investigate if disciplinary action against Nihan must be pursued.

Nihan was placed under suspension by JSC after he was charged and convicted on terrorism in 2016. The ruling read that Magistrate Nihan had utilized a court laptop to download and forge a court order.
