Parliament committee to quiz minister over parking stickers

A lawmaker has submitted a motion to the Parliament to summon and question the country's transport minister over the recent hike in parking violation stickers.

Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir who filed the motion said the authorities have continued to penalize parking violations without offering a reasonable solution to the shortage in parking spaces in the capital Male.

Jabir told AVAS on Tuesday that penalizing parking violations without offering more parking spaces was in contradiction to the policies of the new government.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had vowed not to penalize parking violations without establishing more parking spaces in Male.

The government in January had briefly enforced the president's pledge. However, statistics from the traffic police showed that 1,350 parking violations stickers had been issued just last week.

Parking violations carry hefty fines with MVR250 for a first time offence. A second offence carries a fine of MVR500 with MVR750 for the third time or more.
