Environment Minister reveals plans for nation-wide cleanup program

Environment Minister Dr Hussain Rasheed Hassan has revealed that a nation-wide clean up program is being organized by the Ministry.

Speaking at the Parliament on Thursday, Dr Hussain expressed concern over the waste management issue faced across Maldives, and revealed that the framework a nation-wide cleanup program has been structured. However, the date the program will commence was not revealed.

"We have submitted the clean-up program for the bidding process to Finance Ministry. When the bids are announced, cleanups will begin in individual islands", he said.

Minister further stated that the Ministry will be working with the island councils to ensure more waste is not accumulated.

Noting the waste produced in the Male' city sewerage system, the Minister said that the sewerage system of Male' is no longer adequate to cater to a large population.
