Thriving fishing sector increases exports

The amount of fish being exported from the Maldives has increased significantly.

Import / Export statistics issued by Maldives Customs Service said the FOB price of goods exported from the Maldives during September this year reach MVR 166 million, which is a 22% increment compared to the goods worth MVR 136 million exported during the same period last year. Customs said the flourishing fishing sector since the first quarter of the year greatly contributes to the hike, with fish being the number one item being exported this year.

While raw fish worth MVR 77 million was exported to Thailand in September, Thailand possesses 47% of Maldives export market. While France contributes to 8% of exports at MVR 13 million, both United Kingdom and Germany possessed 6%, receiving exports worth MVR 10 million each. America followed behind with 5% of exports worth MVR 8 million.

Customs said the revenue generated by the State during September has also increased, with a 9% hike recorded compared to the same period last year. While the state received MVR 262 million during September last year, this year, MVR 286 million was received during the same period.
