Medias support to merge MMC and BROADCOM

Heads of local medias have supported the Parliament's efforts to regulate medias by merging Maldives Media Council (MMC) and Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BROADCOM).

The parliament's committee on Independent Institutions made the decision to merge the two entities, and established a sub committee comprising of four members for the purpose. The members on the sub committee are Velidhoo MP Abdulla Shafeeq, Villimale MP Ahmed Ushaam, Gan MP Mohamed Wisam and Guraidhoo MP Ibrahim Riza.

The Sub Committee organised a meeting on Monday night with senior officials of local medias to discuss the merging of the two entities. Both the Media Council and BROADCOM are established under two different laws.

While BROADCOM comprises of 7 members nominated by President that are approved by the Parliament, the Media Council is comprised of 8 members elected from among local medias, and 7 members from the public. Most media members present at the meeting proposed to structure the merged entity to include members elected from among the medias in addition to members appointed by the Parliament and from among the public.
