The parliament's committee on Economic Affairs has approved to appoint Fathuhulla Jameel as Commissioner General of Taxation.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih nominated Fathuhulla, and Assistant Commissioner of Customs Ismail Nashiz for the post, and forwarded the names for parliament deliberation. After interviewing both nominees, the Economic Affairs committee approved to appoint Fathuhulla for the post, and forwarded his name to the parliament floor.
Fathuhulla has filled several senior positions at Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) in the past. He worked as a Revenue Officer in 2013 and also served as a Senior Revenue Officer and Director General at MIRA.
The President also forwarded six names for the post of Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation. The committee has approved to forward the names of Asma Shafeeu and Ismail Sajid to the parliament floor after interviewing the candidates.
President Solih recently ratified the Second Amendment to the Tax Administration Act. The amendment, signed into law on 12 September 2019, reconstituted the composition of the governing board of MIRA—the President appoints five of the seven-member board, including the Commissioner General of Taxation and Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation.
Under the new amendments, the board of MIRA must be reconstituted to include Commissioner General of Taxation and Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation within 30 days after the amendments are ratified. While the deadline has already passed, MIRA currently remains in a legal limbo.
The position of Commissioner General of Taxation was most recently filled by Yazeed Mohamed while Hassan Zareer was the Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation. However, both individuals lost their positions due to the recently ratified amendments.
