JSC to probe High Court judge

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has made the decision to investigate a disciplinary case against High Court Justice Shujau Usman.

JSC said they deliberated on the matter and reached the decision to pursue the investigation during the commission's meeting held Wednesday. The commission will also be probing High Court judge Hussain Shaheed and Hulhudhuffaaru Chief Magistrate Ali Musthafa.

Shujau Usman has overseen the trials of high-profile politicians in both in the lower courts and the High Court. He was part of the Criminal Court bench that found former President Mohamed Nasheed guilty on terror charges, sentencing him to 13 years in jail.

Shujau was appointed to the High Court in August 2018 when then High Court Chief Judge Abdulla Didi was appointed to the Supreme Court. While Abdulla Didi has now been dismissed from the Supreme Court over a disciplinary issue, this is the first time a top court judge has been impeached through the parliament.
