Iranian boat detained after drugs discovered aboard

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) have revealed that drugs were discovered aboard an Iranian vessel drifting in Maldivian waters.

The boat, with seven people aboard, was assisted by MNDF earlier Sunday after receiving reports of a boat drifting off Aa. Manadhoo around 8.30 am. The boat has now been detained after the drugs were discovered on the vessel.

The boat was detained in a special operation conducted later the same day after MNDF received reports of a suspicious foreign boat in Maldivian waters.

MNDF said substances thought to be drugs were discovered after the boat was detained and searched. Further searches are being conducted jointly with Maldives Police Service.

Last a month, an Iranian boat carrying over 70 kg of drugs was intercepted in Maldivian waters. While 13 people have been arrested in connection to the case, this includes six Maldivians and seven Iranians. The police are currently investigating the case.
