Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has stated that it would be beneficial for Maldives if neighboring Sri Lanka achieves peace and stability.
Minister Shahid made these remarks in a post he wrote on Twitter offering congratulations to President-elect Gotabaya Rajapaksa on winning the Sri Lankan Presidential Elections held on 16th November 2019.
He said the Maldives should be joyful that the change in administration has brought peace and stability to Maldives and Sri Lanka respectively. The minister also expressed his hopes to take the unwavering friendship and partnership between the countries to another level.
Shahid met with presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa on his official visit to Sri Lanka in May earlier this year.
Former Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa who played a key role in putting a stop to the Tamil Tigers' 25-year occupation in Maldives won the Presidential Elections with a Southern, Buddhist majority of 52.25% votes.
Closest competitor Housing Minister Sajith Premadasa has accepted defeat and congratulated Gotabaya on his victory.
Elections Commission revealed that 80% of the 16 million people eligible voted.
