Foreign Minister meets with officials of newly elected Sri Lankan gov't

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid on Thursday met with the officials of Sri Lanka's newly elected government.

In separate meetings held at Colombo, Sri Lanka, Minister Shahid met with His Excellency Gotabaya Rajapaksa, President of Sri Lanka, Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, and Minister of Foreign Relations Dinesh Gunawardena.

Foreign Ministry said Foreign Minister conveyed greetings and well wishes from President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to President Rajapaksa and the people of Sri Lanka during his meeting with the President.

Foreign Minister also reiterated the commitment of the Maldivian Government to work closely with the Government of Sri Lanka to further consolidate the strong bonds of friendship that has long existed between the two countries. Minister Shahid expressed confidence that the existing ties of friendship and cooperation that both countries enjoy will continue to flourish under President Rajapaksa’s Leadership.

During his call to Prime Minister Mahindra Rajapaksa, who was the former president of the country, the Minister reiterated the commitment of the Maldivian Government to work closely with the Government of Sri Lanka to further consolidate the strong bonds of friendship that has long existed between the two countries.

During his call to Minister Gunawardena, the minister congratulated his counterpart on his appointment and exchanged views on exploring further avenues for cooperation, particularly on trade, investments, & people to people contact. Both ministers agreed to work closely to take the Maldives -Sri Lanka relationship to new heights.

Foreign Minister Shahid was accompanied to the meetings by His Excellency Omar Abdul Razzak, Ambassador of Maldives in Sri Lanka and Deputy Head of Mission Khadeeja Najeeha.
